Short Bio

I paint abstract acrylic paintings for the ease of exploration and experimentation.

Statement

I paint abstract acrylic paintings for the ease of exploration and experimentation. As an artist with ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder), acrylic offers immediate visual feedback that I crave while also offering the grace of course correction - all while offering vibrant color and depth.

While abstract, my work often reflects my relationships with others, myself, and with my own mind. Themes of seeking balance and weathering life's ups and downs are prevalent.

Most frequently in my work, I examine my own struggles with my need for structure and the conflicting urge for spontaneity and freedom. Defined, geometric shapes combined with more flowing, organic shapes and dramatic, wide sweeping painting strokes underneath more polished layers reflect this push and pull.

Biography

Jamie (Jay) Thomson is a metro Detroit based painter, brand designer, and retired psychologist. She grew up in rural Northwest Ohio and has lived in Virginia, Missouri, Florida, and Australia. This exposure to very different places and the accompanying art communities has influenced the art she creates today.

Jamie minored in art at Ohio Northern University where she received a BA in 1997. she went on to pursue a career in psychology but found it was not her true life calling and in 2011 she got an AA in digital design. This rather unconventional return to art and design reflects her overall struggle to acknowledge the ever present role art has played in her life.
